In 1820, Summerville was the scene of a major military event during the War of 1812. General William Moultrie and his militia fought off an attack by British forces in what is now known as the Battle of Fort Dorchester.

In 1847, Summerville was officially incorporated and adopted its first official seal. The seal contains an image of an old-fashioned steam train which pays homage to the town's history as one of the first railroad towns in South Carolina. During this period, Summerville underwent significant growth and development due to its prime location on the Charleston & Western Railroad line.

The town was also home to one of the earliest African-American schools in South Carolina. In 1870, a former slave named Robert Smalls established a school for Blacks on his property near Summerville. The school later became known as the Robert Smalls Institute and was used to educate students until it closed in 1971.
