Historical Facts of Mullins, SC

Mullins is a city in Marion County, South Carolina. The population was 3,979 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County. Mullins is located in northeastern South Carolina, northeast of Florence and east of Latta.

The area around what would become Mullins was settled in the early 18th century by Scottish and Irish immigrants who were attracted to the area by its fertile soil and mild climate. The city was named for Captain James Mullins, an early settler who built a house and gristmill on Biggins Creek in 1735. The city was chartered in 1856.

Mullins served as a regional center of trade and manufacturing during the 19th century. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad ran through Mullins, which made it a hub for shipping agricultural products from the surrounding area. Textiles also became an important industry in Mullins, with several mills being established in the city beginning in the late 19th century.

Today, Mullins is a small city with a historic downtown district that features several Victorian-style buildings dating back to the 19th century. The city's economy is still based largely on agriculture, with many farmers living in and around Mullins. However, the city has also become home to a number of businesses and manufacturing plants in recent years.
