Historical Facts of Florence, SC

The city of Florence was founded in 1866 and named for General Henry A. Florence, who served in both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The city was developed as a railroad hub due to its location on the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad, and later became known for its textile industry.

Florence was the site of a significant battle during the American Civil War. On March 3-6, 1865, Union forces led by Major General William T. Sherman clashed with Confederate troops under General Joseph B. Kershaw near Florence, resulting in a Union victory and significant losses for both sides.

Florence became an important industrial center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with more than 40 textile mills in operation throughout the area. In addition to textiles, Florence is also home to a variety of other industries such as automotive manufacturing and food processing.

This beach park is located on Lake City’s northern shore and it features restrooms, showers, picnic shelters, playgrounds, fishing piers, and a swimming area with lifeguard services available during peak season times (May-August). Visitors can also rent canoes or kayaks here for exploring nearby creeks.
