Historical Facts of West Columbia, SC

The first European settlement in what is now West Columbia was made in 1732 when three families from Pennsylvania moved to the Dutch Fork area. In 1736, a courthouse was built on the banks of the Congaree River. The village that grew up around it was first known as Saxe Gotha, after two of the earliest settlers. In 1785, Saxe Gotha was chartered as a town and renamed West Columbia in 1911.
