Historical Facts of Lugoff, SC

The history of Lugoff began in 1784 when Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter was deeded land in what is now Kershaw County. The first post office in Lugoff was established in 1837. The town was officially incorporated in 1888, and it received its name from a combination of two local families: the Lugoffs and the Griersons.

Lugoff has been home to many notable figures throughout its history. John C. Calhoun, an American statesman and seventh Vice President of the United States, was born here in 1782. Other famous people from Lugoff include Hall of Fame baseball player Enos Slaughter, former Major League Baseball pitcher Chris Carpenter, seven-time NASCAR champion Richard Petty, and NFL quarterback Stephen Garcia. 

In 1827, the Camden and Lancaster Railroad was built through Hibernia Plantation, and a small depot was erected. This event would prove to be pivotal in the history of Lugoff, as it led to the establishment of the town that bears its name today.  The town of Lugoff was officially incorporated in 1891. The name "Lugoff" is derived from the Scottish word "luggie," meaning "small stream." This is fitting, as the town is located on Mill Creek, a tributary of the Wateree River.
